People sure love the Nanny Police State

August 31, 2007

Larry Craig has been and is being railroaded by an absolutely homophobic Nanny Police State shake down . I hope he has the balls to to tell them to go to hell .

His supporters should press for an investigation of the Shake Down Cop who , while spouting that he is not anti-gay , interprets taps of the foot and all the other disputed minor actions as reason to threaten people with $1000 fines and missed flights and , as a bonus for submitting , a public record as , in this instance , a 62 year old gay grandfather on the make between plane flights .

Craig’s enormous error was to succumb to these thugs .

I am disgusted ( not a new condition ) with the Republican leadership and candidates who instantaneously jumped on the Kill Craig bone wagon as soon as they learned he was wounded .

The final pieces of evidence I would want is : was Craig waiting for some stall to open up or did he have other choices [ 09/06 | answer : apparently waiting for a stall ] , and did the senator indeed take a crap ?

Ron Paul on the Terrace

August 31, 2007

One of the top 5 Yahoo News stories as of this morning is an AP article on Ron Paul’s grassroots support — only in this case the roots start at the top of the NYC skyline:

NEW YORK - Passengers on a plane leaving New York could see three words in 4-foot block letters painted on an East Village rooftop terrace as they ascended: GOOGLE RON PAUL. The entreaty to search the Internet for news of the Republican congressman from rural Texas is one of the more visible signs of enthusiasm from a do-it-yourself base of Web fans. Their support doesn’t show up in public opinion polls, but it’s unmatched among presidential candidates in its passion.

Anyone familiar with the local Ron Paul movement will not be surprised to know that the rooftop sign was masterminded by our own local libertarian doctor, Avery Knapp (pictured above):

Avery Knapp is typical of the Paul Web supporter. A 28-year-old radiology resident, Knapp describes himself as a lifelong conservative who voted for President Bush in 2000 before growing disillusioned with the Iraq war and federal spending.

Bush “did nothing but increase the size of government. The Republican Party needs to move back to its core principles,” Knapp said. Many Paul supporters share Knapp’s disdain for what he called a “neo-conservative clique” and hope Paul can spark a Goldwater-style insurgency.

Dr. Knapp will be the guest speaker at the next Manhattan Libertarian Party meeting on September 10th.

Finally the Weapons Inspectors Come Through…

August 30, 2007

… They’ve uncovered Weapons of Mass Destruction right inside their own offices. Seems the wacky bumblers at Turtle Bay brought “six to eight” cannisters of nerve gas home with them as souvenirs from Iraq in 1996, and then forgot where they left them. Doh! The nerve gas was rediscovered today while the kleptocrats were cleaning out their offices at UN headquarters. ABC is reporting UN headquarters was evacuated (by which I assume they mean everyone at headquarters shit their pants when they found the bombs).

We don’t have to worry about Al Qaeda smuggling Weapons of Mass Destruction into the city. Our “friends” at the UN are already doing it, and we’re picking up the tab. I’ll just add it to my long list of reasons for booting the UN out of NYC once and for all.

Who Do You Have to Blow at the MTA to Get a FOIL Response?

August 30, 2007

The MTA has been stonewalling bloggers onNYTurf for over two months on their Freedom of Information Law request for transit schedule data, yet it will apparently have no problem providing that same data to Google for its new Transit Planning project.

9/11 Families Against Giuliani

August 29, 2007

How’s a fellow supposed to run for President of 9/11 when even the 9/11 families don’t want him? It seems those who lost loved ones in the twin towers are finally getting fed up with Giuliani milking their tragedy for political gain. And as Ron Moore reported last week, the firefighters are wise to Rudy’s scam. Even his own kids can’t stand him. The jig is up, Giuliani! Go slither back under whatever rock you came from.

NY Firefighters video exposes Giuliani’s 9/11 lies (again)

August 18, 2007

The International Association of Fire Fighters (IAFF), New York’s Firefighter’s union published a video this week that sums up one small part of the myth that Rudy Giuliani is a competent leader. You can see it here. In 13 minutes firefighters and family members present first hand,  a few facts about Giulaiani’s failure to provide effective radios 8 years after the first World Trade Center bombing and after repeated political maneuverings to hand a no-bid contract to friends of Giuliani’s administration.  Of course this is just the tip of the iceberg.  In The Grand Illusion, The Untold Stroy of Rudy Giulaini and 9/11,  authors Wayne Barrett and Dan Collins present the case in page after page of shocking detail.  In summary Giuliani allowed chaos, indecision and ego to reign supreme thoughout his administration awarding the radio contract to political supporters Motorola despite the fact everyone knew their radios were defective, despite the fact that at least one other bidder, Ericsson, was eager to bid and tried to do so.

Taxi drivers, hair-braiders, street vendors, rock’n'roll fans, pot smokers, the Port Authority all know that Giuliani repeatedly victimized those he thought couldn’t fight back in favor of image, politics and campaign contributions.

Unless you enjoy being easily fooled, the video and the book are “musts” for anyone considering pulling the Giuliani lever in the primaries or the general election.

Ron

Governor No-Fun

August 16, 2007

Capitol Confidential is reporting that Governor Spitzer just vetoed a bill that would have allowed Segways on roads and sidewalks. The governor gave a bunch of lame reasons for keeping them illegal, most of which boil down to he’s only happy when he’s stopping other folks from enjoying themselves.

Serf City columnist Bob Armstrong was a long-time activist for legalization of the Segway’s downtown cousin, the motorboard. That is, until he finally got fed up with it all the nanny-state bullshit, moved west, and traded his scooter for a horse.

Mayor Mike’s Motivation

August 13, 2007

The good folks at Jews for the Preservation of Firearms Ownership just released the handbill above, which nicely distills the real motivation behind Mike Bloomberg’s anti-gun agenda. Mayor Bloomberg is one of several self-defense-hating politicians the JPFO skewers in a series of handbills designed to promote their new documentary, The Gang. Why not print out a few and leave them around town?

Surprise, Surprise

The state’s ”dedicated” tax fund for bridge and highway repair has seen $750 million diverted to, um, undedicated boondoggle spending. (Hat tip: The Daily Gotham)

Of course, the politicians have an entirely predictable solution: newer, bigger dedicated taxes for bridge and highway repair.
