My Op-Ed in Today’s Daily News

I have a guest editorial on the advantages of home-schooling in today’s Daily News, the 5th-highest-circulation daily newspaper in the United States. (Which, considering the state of the newspaper industry, means a least a couple dozen people should read it.)

    Professor’s comments are so stereotypical.

Jim- We agree that home schooling is ideal for Americans that have the money and the time to concentrate on their childrens education.

We think that computers in the classroom can provide a way for children to gain the some of the benefits of home schooling (they can concentrate on the areas of the course work that they need the most help with.) Click Link:

Steve, homeschooling doesn’t require as much time and money as you might imagine. Those definitely help, but the more critical asset is determination.

I mentioned in my op-ed that my wife personally knows three single mothers who work full-time and homeschool. Now just this morning, I received the following email from a complete stranger:

“thanks for the great op-ed! i am also a single working mom who homeschools and although it is a ton of work the joys and rewards have been great.”

This courageous woman and others like her are heroes to me. Yes, of course it is easier when there are two parents, and they can afford for one to stay home and focus exclusively on child-raising and homeschooling. But it can be done by virtually any parent of any means, if he or she is determined enough. Groups like the Home Schooling Legal Defense Association can even step in with financial assistance for hardship cases.

I’m all for computers in the classroom, as long as the classroom is located somewhere other than a government indoctrination center.
